India seeks unity as BRICS divided over war on Iran and Gulf tensions

Foreign ministers from BRICS nations are meeting in New Delhi, but deep divisions have emerged over Iran’s call for the bloc to condemn what it describes as violations of international law by the United States and Israel.
Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, urged members to challenge American “superiority and immunity”, whilst Tehran accused the UAE of blocking a joint statement unless it includes condemnation of recent Iranian strikes in the Gulf.
India, this year’s BRICS chair, has called for dialogue and for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital trade route.
Experts warn consensus is unlikely as member states grapple with energy shortages and supply chain disruptions linked to ongoing conflicts.
