Israel strikes Beirut’s southern suburbs and Tyre as death toll rises in Lebanon

Israeli forces have carried out a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs for the second time since a ceasefire was agreed in April, while intensifying attacks across southern Lebanon ahead of planned US-mediated talks. Israeli strikes hit Tyre, Nabatieh and surrounding areas, killing at least 16 people and wounding dozens more, according to Lebanese health authorities. Entire residential neighbourhoods have been reduced to rubble, with forced evacuation orders pushing thousands further north beyond the Zahrani River.
Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and expanding a “security zone” in southern Lebanon after continued drone attacks by Hezbollah on Israeli troops and positions. The Israeli military says operations are intensifying and warns Hezbollah will pay a heavy price. Hezbollah says its attacks are a response to Israeli operations and occupation of border areas.
Humanitarian agencies warn the situation in southern Lebanon is becoming untenable, with civilians repeatedly displaced and critical infrastructure heavily damaged. The escalation comes despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, with Lebanese and Israeli military delegations expected to meet in Washington as Beirut pushes again for a ceasefire and greater state control over weapons in the south.
