\u201cUnfortunately if you look at the number of fatalities, the homeless people and the destruction of Gaza in proportion to this \u2013 another 70, less 70 people dead \u2013 in the eyes of the Israeli government and the Israeli public opinion, it\u2019s worse \u2013 the death of someone as senior as Mohammed Deif,\u201d he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will allow [Netanyahu] to declare absolute victory,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Paradoxically, the perceived victory may be Israel\u2019s exit strategy from the war, he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe war against Hamas has come to its climax,\u201d the analyst said. \u201cIsrael is looking for a way out before Netanyahu gets to Washington and to the [US] Congress. He has to be able to declare some victory and maybe Mohammed Deif was on the hit list and it coincided with his timeline.\u201d<\/p>\n
There is also a consensus among Israel\u2019s military leadership that Israel has a commitment to get out the captives still held in Gaza, which also include US citizens, Eldar said.<\/p>\n
