Qatar\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari says Doha is \u201cstill waiting\u201d for Israel\u2019s response to a proposal for a truce and captive release deal, after Hamas agreed to the framework more than a week ago.
\nThe latest proposal put forward by mediators involves an initial 60-day truce and staggered exchanges of Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners, but Israel has appeared reluctant to budge from its latest demand that all the captives be freed at once.
\n\u201cThe statements [from Israel] that we are hearing right now do not fill us with confidence,\u201d said al-Ansari, who previously described the latest deal as \u201calmost identical\u201d to an earlier US-backed plan.
\nWhile not directly responding to the latest proposal, Israeli PM Netanyahu announced he had instructed new negotiations seeking \u201cthe release of all our hostages and the end of the war under conditions acceptable to Israel\u201d. He also doubled down on plans for the Israeli army to seize Gaza City.
\nAl-Ansari said mediators did not \u201ctake seriously\u201d any announcements outside the negotiation process itself and that Israel is now responsible for responding to the current offer. \u201cAnything else is political posturing by the Israeli side,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
