Aaron David Miller, a former US Middle East negotiator and analyst, told Al Jazeera from Washington DC that US diplomacy has never applied democracy and human rights consistently.
\nHe said that despite Donald Trump overturning many diplomatic norms, US alliances have not weakened and global leaders still seek engagement with Washington.
\nMiller noted that Middle Eastern leaders, including Israel\u2019s partners, have imposed no real costs on the US or Israel over Gaza.
\nHe dismissed claims of Trump-brokered peace deals, saying Iran saw only a temporary halt in fighting without diplomacy.
\nOn Gaza, he said phase one of the ceasefire is in place but moving to phase two will be extremely difficult.
\nMiller warned Trump is overseeing an unprecedented expansion of presidential power that is undermining US democratic norms.
\nOn Venezuela, he said Trump has left himself little room but to force Nicol\u00e1s Maduro from power, risking US credibility if he fails.<\/p>\n
