Rob Geist Pinfold, a lecturer in international security at King\u2019s College London, says Iran\u2019s claim that it is only targeting US assets in the Gulf region \u201chas to be taken with far more than a pinch of salt\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Pinfold said Iran\u2019s targets \u201care in fact primarily large-sale infrastructure and civilian targets, as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not a mistake, this is by design,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Pinfold explained that Iran has been engaging in a \u201ccomplete different approach to war fighting\u201d than in the past, where it seemed to opt for slow and steady escalation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat they\u2019re doing now is trying to unleash as much chaos as possible to destabilise the region and global markets, hurt the economy, hurt the GCC states in order that the US will at some point decide that this conflict is no longer worth its while anymore and will push for a ceasefire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we\u2019ve seen Iran is targeting every single GCC state; it is prepared to burn its bridges with all of them to pursue this very uncertain and high-risk strategy \u2013 and it really shows you how Iran feel like it\u2019s facing an existential threat.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor them, it\u2019s really a do-or-die moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
