\nThe ‘Goddess’ escalator project in Wushan, a county in China\u2019s western Chongqing municipality, stands out for its ambition even in a country where vast infrastructure has become ubiquitous. The almost 1km route took four years to complete, has more than two dozen individual escalators and lifts and takes 21 minutes to ascend, the FT’s Thomas Hale explains.\u2060<\/p>\n
