This video is for those of you who don\u2019t remember the last time you cleaned your laptop. After all, you probably enjoy using it and want to keep it in good shape\u2014so it would be best to clean it regularly to stop dirt from gumming up its guts. <\/p>\n
Things you\u2019ll need
\nBefore you get started, you\u2019ll need microfiber cloths, pressurized canned air or a rechargeable electric air blower, plastic dental cleaners with short bristles, and some toothpicks or cotton swabs. Some of these you might need to shop online for or at an electronics store, but many you can find at your local grocery store or even a dollar store. You\u2019ll also want dish soap, vinegar, and 70% isopropyl alcohol if you can find them. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly, making it suitable for cleaning electronics. Ammonia or bleach-based products can damage computers, particularly screens, so it\u2019s better to purchase solutions specifically for cleaning screens.<\/p>\n
Starting the process
\nFirst thing to do is turn off your laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery if applicable. Lay a microfiber towel under the laptop. Remember not to pick up the laptop with one hand, especially not by the lid. This stresses the chassis and the screen is particularly fragile.<\/p>\n
Cleaning with air
\nUse the pressurized canned air or electric air blower to clear debris under keyboard keys, around screen edges, in and around touchpad buttons, physical ports, and cooling vents. Canned air works best in short bursts from farther back. Keep it upright and spraying at an angle where dust and debris will blow out of affected areas instead of pushed further in. Stubborn dust in cooling vents can be gently loosened with a dental pick or cotton swab before being blown out with canned air. For cleaning fans, carefully insert a toothpick or cotton swab before blowing it out with canned air, so that the blades don\u2019t overspin. Importantly, be sure to wear a mask over your nose and mouth to avoid concentrated laptop grime blowing into them.<\/p>\n
Keyboard cleaning
\nAfter thoroughly blowing away any debris from the keyboard, it\u2019s disinfection time. Lightly dampen a corner of a microfiber cloth with a cleaning product like vinegar or diluted isopropyl alcohol. Damp is the key word here, not wet. Gently press the key with the dampened corner and make small circular motions with a finger. When the cloth corner gets soiled, move onto another corner and keep going. Cotton swabs dipped in diluted isopropyl alcohol also work for this purpose\u2014but let it dry before you turn it back on. <\/p>\n
Stains and screens
\nAfter finishing the keyboard, move on to the outer surfaces with the same technique. Stains on your laptop\u2019s level surfaces can be erased with small amounts of dish soap.
\nFor the screen, start from the outside and work your way in, using a free hand to steady the screen. You don\u2019t need to apply pressure, the cloth texture should be enough to cleanse the screen. Don\u2019t spray the screen directly, since stray droplets can find their way under the screen and mess with the circuits.<\/p>\n
After following this advice, your laptop should be cleaner. Keep it that way by keeping a microfiber cloth nearby with a little disinfectant to keep the keyboard and other areas in good shape. Cleaning your laptop makes it more pleasant to use but also improves its longevity by preventing the buildup of gunk that can slow it down and cause it to overheat. It can also improve your personal health, since your keyboard and other laptop parts will be cleaner now for you to touch with the fingers you eat, drink, and rub your eyes with, for a start.
