Listen to “Recreational” by Tsatsamis
I’ll admit it — I purposely held off writing about “Recreational”, the latest single from Tsatsamis, in the hope that a video might follow. And while what’s arrived isn’t quite an official music video, the payoff is still worth it. Reuniting with frequent collaborator, film director and photographer Sam Taylor-Edwards, Tsatsamis has unveiled a sleek and sensual visualiser that perfectly complements this hedonistic synth-pop banger.
“Recreational” marks the dawn of a new era. Serving as our first taste of the upcoming mixtape “Tsycophant”, expected to drop in May. Thus a release aligning beautifully with newly announced live dates — 1st May at King Tut’s in Glasgow, 2nd May at YES Manchester, and 8th May at Village Underground, London. Similarly, giving fans the perfect opportunity to experience this new chapter live. (Tickets available now)
Sonically, the track is steeped in luscious ’80s musicality. There are flashes of George Michael’s emotive pop grandeur. Additionally, the pulsating synth urgency of Bronski Beat, and the polished electronic sheen reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys. Yet, rather than feeling derivative, “Recreational” is unmistakably Tsatsamis — introspective and emotionally intelligent.
Lyrically, Tsatsamis continues to lean into an unapologetically queer narrative. Subsequently, exploring the bittersweet reality of loving someone who is fighting their own inner battles. There’s vulnerability here, but also strength — an understanding that desire and self-preservation can often sit uncomfortably side by side. It’s this emotional honesty that elevates the track beyond pure pop escapism.
Ultimately, “Recreational” doesn’t just tease what’s to come — it confidently sets the emotional and sonic blueprint for this next phase. Tsatsamis isn’t simply revisiting the golden age of synth-pop; they’re reframing it through a deeply personal, queer lens that feels urgent and lived-in. If this is the energy ushering in “Tsycophant”, then we’re about to witness an era defined not only by irresistible hooks. Also by fearless storytelling and heart-on-sleeve authenticity.
