Decades later, he\u2019s still trying to wrap his head around how hard some fans took it \u2013 and what that says about the way heavy music builds identity around bands.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent chat with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/news\/bruce-dickinson-on-fan-outcry-after-iron-maiden-exit-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metal Hammer<\/a><\/em>, the singer admitted that the backlash made more emotional sense to everyone else than it did to him. He says he simply doesn\u2019t feel the same \u201ctribal thing\u201d many of us have with our favourite bands or with football clubs. For him, music is something you make and enjoy; for a lot of metal fans, it\u2019s something you swear loyalty to.<\/p>\n<p>He recalls his wife spelling out the problem in brutally simple terms: \u201cMy wife did tell me this afterwards: \u2018You know the problem was, when you left, it didn\u2019t matter if you\u2019d made the best record in the world \u2013 nobody could listen to it,\u2019\u201d <strong> <\/strong>he said, looking back on the reception to his 1994 solo record <em>Balls To Picasso<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>From a fan\u2019s point of view, that tracks. For many <strong>Maiden<\/strong> die-hards, any album that didn\u2019t have the logo on the cover and the rest of the band behind him might as well not have existed. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Dickinson<\/strong> summed up that wall of resistance in one of the most telling quotes of the whole interview: \u201c\u2018Nobody was gonna give it a shot because it was just so overwhelming that you weren\u2019t there in <strong>Maiden<\/strong> anymore.\u2019 And I was just like, \u2018I don\u2019t understand that.\u2019 It\u2019s the same reason why I don\u2019t support a football club. I support the best football club; I don\u2019t support a football club.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t get that tribal thing. I understand that it\u2019s why people love <strong>Maiden<\/strong> a lot, I understand that, but I find it hard to locate that inside me as a general way of going about my life,\u201d <strong>Dickinson<\/strong> added.<\/p>\n<p>Before he even quit, <strong>Bruce Dickinson<\/strong> had already tested the waters with his solo debut <em>Tattooed Millionaire<\/em> in 1990 \u2013 a swaggering hard rock record that hit number 14 in the UK and climbed even higher in Finland, going Silver in the UK within ten days. <\/p>\n<p>Once he left, he doubled down: <em>Balls To Picasso<\/em> (1994), the more alternative-leaning <em>Skunkworks<\/em> (1996), then the molten one-two punch of <em>Accident Of Birth<\/em> (1997) and <em>The Chemical Wedding<\/em> (1998). On paper, that\u2019s a killer solo run \u2013 melodic, heavy, and increasingly dark. But a chunk of the fanbase was still hung up on the idea that <strong>Bruce Dickinson<\/strong> \u201cshould\u201d be in <strong>Maiden<\/strong>, full stop.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Maiden<\/strong> carried on with <strong>Blaze Bayley<\/strong> at the mic, pushing into grimmer, more introspective territory on <em>The X Factor<\/em> (1995) and <em>Virtual XI<\/em> (1998). Those albums split opinion hard; to this day, they\u2019re fighting for reassessment in metal circles. Between the fans who refused to accept the <strong>Blaze<\/strong> era and the ones who wouldn\u2019t touch <strong>Bruce<\/strong>\u2019s solo work, that \u201ctribal thing\u201d he\u2019s talking about was fully on display.<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Bruce Dickinson<\/strong> and guitarist <strong>Adrian Smith<\/strong> re-entered the fold in 1999, the reunion lit a fuse under the band\u2019s creativity. <strong>Dickinson<\/strong> said that coming back alongside <strong>Adrian Smith<\/strong> sparked a \u201ccreative explosion\u201d as they began writing what became the 2000 album <em>Brave New World<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really was a brave new world for us,\u201d he explained. \u201cEverything I\u2019d learnt during that time away all went into the pot.
