Maynard James Keenan<\/a> says that Tool<\/a>\u00a0have become \u201cgrandpa music\u201d and he\u2019s got some pretty strong evidence to back it up.<\/p>\n During a recent appearance on the Steve-O\u2019s Wild Ride<\/a><\/em> podcast, Kennan was asked about how the group Puscifer<\/a> fits in with his other, more celebrated bands. The singer responded with an anecdote, recalling his experience interacting with an old friend and their children.<\/p>\n \u201cAll the kids from ages\u2026 16 to 30, whatever, [were] huge Puscifer fans,\u201d Keenan explained. \u201cAnd they view Tool as like, when your uncle was into Steely Dan<\/a>. You know, it’s this other thing that’s like, my weird uncle is into that.\u201d<\/p>\n The singer wasn\u2019t upset by the kids\u2019 reaction. \u201cI just thought it was funny like that,\u201d he noted, \u201cbecause I’m in that [band] and I’m like, \u2018We’re not Steely Dan.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Keenan went on to analyze the situation further, explaining that the changing perspective of Tool was inevitable given how long they\u2019ve been around.<\/p>\n \u201cI understand the procession because whatever you’re into as that adolescent kid, whatever your older siblings or uncle or grandfather was into, that’s silly. That’s grandpa music,\u201d the singer remarked. \u201cAnd we’ve been around long enough that we’re like, I’m spanning like three generations of people listening.\u201d<\/p>\n Tool released their first EP in 1991, with their debut album, Undertow<\/em>, following in 1993. Basic math will show that a fan who was 30 when the band got started would now be eligible for Social Security. So while the idea of Tool becoming \u201cgrandpa music\u201d may be sobering to some of their die hard fans, it\u2019s also at least somewhat true.<\/p>\n \u201cI get it,\u201d Keenan conceded. \u201cWe’re officially the Rush<\/a> of fans that are like, \u2018I don’t want to listen to Rush.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\nWhat Makes Tool ‘Grandpa Music’?<\/h3>\n
