He was 80.<\/p>\n<p>According to a post on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jack.douglas.773\/posts\/pfbid09dcyEy1AkXwH12dbB6KmvBfKt3sxbeL3ERE78UmyjPxC6YJWcSdPEuQKwEidZ7Hsl\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook page<\/a> from his family, Douglas &#8220;passed away peacefully on Monday night. As many of you who follow him know, he produced great music and lived a colorful life. &#8230; He will be missed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Douglas was born in the Bronx in New York City on Nov. 6, 1945, and got his start as a folk singer in the early &#8217;60s, and worked on Robert Kennedy&#8217;s senatorial campaign in 1964 as a songwriter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loudwire.com\/best-hard-rock-album-each-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Best Hard Rock Album of Each Year Since 1970<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After graduating from\u00a0New York&#8217;s Institute of Audio Research, Douglas began a career working at local recording studios, first as a janitor before becoming an engineer at the Record Plant, where he worked on records by artists as diverse as <a href=\"https:\/\/loudwire.com\/tags\/alice-cooper\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alice Cooper<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/miles-davis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Miles Davis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/james-gang\/\" target=\"_blank\">James Gang<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center\">Listen to John Lennon&#8217;s &#8216;(Just Like) Starting Over&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>That work led to board assistance on <a href=\"https:\/\/loudwire.com\/tags\/the-who\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Who<\/a>&#8216;s follow-up to <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/history-of-tommy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Tommy<\/em><\/a>, <em>Lifehouse<\/em>. After the project was abandoned, the album was pared down and retitled\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/the-who-whos-next\/\" target=\"_blank\">Who&#8217;s Next<\/a> <\/em>in 1971, with some of Douglas&#8217; engineered songs making the track listing.<\/p>\n<h3>What Records Did Jack Douglas Produce?<\/h3>\n<p>From there, Douglas worked with John Lennon on his 1971 album\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/john-lennon-imagine-album\/\" target=\"_blank\">Imagine<\/a><\/em>, serving as the record&#8217;s engineer.<\/p>\n<p>When Lennon returned to record-making after a five-year hiatus in the &#8217;70s, Douglas was tapped as a coproducer, along with Lennon and <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/yoko-ono\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yoko Ono<\/a>, of his 1980 comeback album,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/john-lennon-double-fantasy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Double Fantasy<\/a><\/em>. (He and Ono later <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/double-fantasy-producer-court-battle-yoko-ono\/\" target=\"_blank\">went to court<\/a> over his royalties for the No. 1 album.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"single-post-image \">\n<figure class=\"img-tag has-sizer alignnone\">\n<p><span class=\"visually-hidden\">jack douglas<\/span><\/p><figcaption><i>Jack Douglas at the 2019 NAMM Show<\/i> (Jesse Grant, Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Douglas stayed busy in the &#8217;70s, working on albums by <a href=\"https:\/\/loudwire.com\/tags\/blue-oyster-cult\/\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Oyster Cult<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/new-york-dolls\/\" target=\"_blank\">New York Dolls<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/patti-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patti Smith<\/a>. He also produced Cheap Trick&#8217;s 1975 <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/cheap-trick-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\">self-titled debut album<\/a> around this time.<\/p>\n<p>In late 1973, he was introduced to Aerosmith, who were starting work on the follow-up to their <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/aerosmith-aerosmith-first-album\/\" target=\"_blank\">self-titled debut album<\/a> from earlier that year.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center\">Listen to Cheap Trick&#8217;s &#8216;Oh, Candy&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>He then worked with the band as a producer or co-producer for the next four years on their multi-platinum albums\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/aerosmith-get-your-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\">Get Your Wings<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1974),\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/aerosmith-toys-in-the-attic\/\" target=\"_blank\">Toys in the Attic<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1975),\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/aerosmith-rocks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rocks<\/a><\/em> (1976) and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/35-years-ago-aerosmith-release-draw-the-line\/\" target=\"_blank\">Draw the Line<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1977).<\/p>\n<h3>What Did Jack Douglas Say About Working With Aerosmith?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;I listened to that first record over and over, and I thought, &#8216;These guys know how to write tunes,'&#8221; Douglas told <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/aerosmith-jack-douglas-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\">UCR in 2025<\/a>. &#8220;My feeling\u00a0[was] that <a href=\"https:\/\/loudwire.com\/tags\/steven-tyler\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steven [Tyler]<\/a> wasn&#8217;t using all of his vocal capabilities, and that both <a href=\"https:\/\/loudwire.com\/tags\/brad-whitford\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brad [Whitford]<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/loudwire.com\/tags\/joe-perry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe [Perry]<\/a> wanted to be more than they were.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center\">Listen to Aerosmith&#8217;s &#8216;Walk This Way&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;They really wanted to work on being great guitarists, in the English kind of way. They weren&#8217;t there yet, but they had a good head start.
