Just when I\u2019m noticing that the evenings are getting darker earlier. Along comes a track that makes me want to keep summer firmly on repeat. Enter Marco Luka<\/strong> with \u201cDon\u2019t Cry<\/strong>\u201d, a breezy, funk-kissed alt-pop number that feels tailor-made for those last lingering golden-hour moments.<\/p>\n

For LA-based, Durham-native singer-songwriter and producer Marco Luka<\/strong>, there\u2019s plenty more going on here than simply another end-of-summer bop. Formerly the lead vocalist of lo-fi alt-pop outfit Weston Estate<\/strong>, Marco is now stepping confidently into his solo era with \u201cDon\u2019t Cry<\/strong>\u201d. Similarly, offering our first taste of his forthcoming debut album, “f_unk”<\/strong>, arriving October 23rd via Arista Records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Of course, Marco\u2019s solo ambitions haven\u2019t suddenly appeared from nowhere. He has been releasing music alongside his work with Weston Estate. Yet now feels like the right moment to put his solo artistry front and centre. And judging by \u201cDon\u2019t Cry<\/strong>\u201d, I\u2019d say he\u2019s making a rather compelling case for himself.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an irresistibly funky undercurrent running through the track, but Marco isn\u2019t interested in recreating funk by the rulebook. Instead, he blends synth-led production with hints of Prince<\/strong>-inspired purple pop funk and new wave textures. He creates something that feels both nostalgic and distinctly contemporary.<\/p>\n

His falsetto glides effortlessly across the production, while beneath the playful grooves sits a more bittersweet narrative. \u201cDon\u2019t Cry<\/strong>\u201d addresses the ache of watching a relationship lose its spark, while still recognising that perhaps a flicker of something remains.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018DON\u2019T CRY\u2019<\/strong> is all about living in the moment,\u201d says Marco<\/strong>. \u201cThere\u2019s no sense in wasting tears on the past or on our fleeting youth when we could just be dancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And dance we shall.<\/p>\n

Directed by Nicholas Buckwalter<\/strong>, the accompanying music video embraces that same philosophy. The clip follows Marco as he seeks out little pockets of adventure while he attempts to chase those funk clouds away. It\u2019s a visual reminder to loosen your grip on whatever is weighing you down. Make the most of what is right in front of you.<\/p>\n

That idea seems to extend across “f_unk”<\/strong>, an album described as music designed to be felt as much as heard \u2014 immersive, instinctive and all-consuming. It may not be a traditional funk record, but it captures the genre\u2019s sense of freedom, movement and visceral connection through Marco\u2019s own interpretation of what funk can sound and feel like in 2026.<\/p>\n

So, summer may be slowly packing its suitcase, but Marco Luka has given me one more reason to keep the windows down and the good vibes turned up. Sometimes, the best way to outrun the end of summer is simply to dance straight through it.<\/p>\n
