FBI Director <a href=\"https:\/\/allhiphop.com\/newsbreak\/fbis-kash-patel-slammed-assata-shakur-tributes-as-disrespectful-to-police\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6117692\">Kash Patel<\/a> praised the NBA legend as a major supporter of law enforcement. The designation is honorary\u2014Shaq hasn\u2019t suddenly become a working federal agent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this should be particularly surprising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaq has been rocking with law enforcement for decades. He\u2019s gone through reserve police training and served in reserve law-enforcement roles. This isn\u2019t some new MAGA-era transformation where Shaq woke up one morning and decided he wanted a badge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Shaq has been Shaq.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But OG Big Matt sees something different happening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s where this gets spicy.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-og-big-matt-has-a-message-for-shaq\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">OG BIG MATT HAS A MESSAGE FOR SHAQ<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OG Big Matt, aka Matthew Chappell, is a verified social commentator with hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers. Politics, race and culture are his bread and butter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And his message about Shaq wasn\u2019t simply, \u201cF### Shaq.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was actually more complicated than that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Big Matt congratulated Shaq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he essentially warned him.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverybody got to choose which audience you want giving the applause.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Matt\u2019s argument is that Shaq has every right to embrace law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the people who don\u2019t trust law enforcement have an equal right to look at Shaq differently because of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And according to Matt, that\u2019s something celebrities have to understand in the social-media era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can\u2019t control both sides anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can\u2019t accept applause from one room and demand silence from the other.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-but-this-is-where-it-gets-personal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">BUT THIS IS WHERE IT GETS PERSONAL<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shaq\u2019s FBI Honor Just BACKFIRED In A Way Nobody Expected\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lr3LwArD-S4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Big Matt goes considerably further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one point, he tells Shaq:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t belong to yourself no more, brother. You belong to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a wild statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But think about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaq isn\u2019t merely a retired basketball player.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s a corporation. He\u2019s commercials. He\u2019s television. He\u2019s sneakers. He\u2019s restaurants. He\u2019s insurance ads. He\u2019s Hip-Hop. He\u2019s basketball. He\u2019s memes. He\u2019s Uncle Shaq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s probably sold you something within the last 72 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And part of the reason that empire works is because\u00a0<strong>almost everybody likes Shaq.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black folks like Shaq. White folks like Shaq. Old people like Shaq. Kids like Shaq. Basketball fans like Shaq. Corporations definitely like Shaq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And law enforcement clearly likes Shaq.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s an extraordinarily valuable special place to occupy in America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what Big Matt is suggesting is that Shaq\u2019s FBI moment exposes the limits of being everybody\u2019s guy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, somebody asks:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Whose guy are you really?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one part of Matt\u2019s argument that is difficult to dismiss. <strong>This badge isn\u2019t like the other badges.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Shaq\u2019s history with local police departments is well established. But standing at Quantico with the director of the FBI carries different symbolism. The FBI isn\u2019t just another police department. And for many Black Americans, those three letters carry historical baggage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bureau\u2019s surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr. is documented history. So is COINTELPRO and the FBI\u2019s targeting and disruption of Black political organizations. That doesn\u2019t mean today\u2019s FBI is identical to the Bureau of J. Edgar Hoover. It does mean people don\u2019t encounter the institution without history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then add Kash Patel.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRlKhea2Q9GBK3mOQcBjOM1gpep9RxU32BTZ_OZQs1zEA&amp;s=10\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EH.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-and-now-we-have-the-real-beef\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AND NOW WE HAVE THE REAL BEEF<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why Shaq versus OG Big Matt is bigger than two grown men arguing on social media. They\u2019re representing two competing ideas about modern celebrity. Ideology.  Shaq\u2019s position, judging by his decades of actions, is essentially: I\u2019m going to be who I am regardless of what people think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Big Matt\u2019s position is: Fine. But everybody else gets to be who they are, too\u2014and that includes deciding they\u2019re no longer rocking with you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I actually think both ideas can exist at the same time. Shaq doesn\u2019t owe the Internet an apology for supporting something he\u2019s supported for decades. Well, he might since he\u2019s been hitting people in their DMs and comments. That\u2019s sad.  But nobody owes Shaq unconditional support either. That\u2019s the part fame cannot purchase. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The universally beloved celebrity may be becoming extinct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael Jordan famously built an empire partly by avoiding public political battles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That formula is increasingly difficult today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Your likes are public.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Your follows are public.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Your donations can become public.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Your pictures are mostly public.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your old interviews are searchable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when you stand beside somebody, millions of people immediately start debating what that photograph says about you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social media turned celebrity into a permanent referendum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everybody gets a vote. Every day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OG Big Matt understands that. And he\u2019s voted multiple times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaq is experiencing it.
