FitFam El Paso identified the area as the East Side. The gathering appeared to be a Halloween event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe KKK hood is not a costume,\u201d the branch said in a Sunday, October 25, statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktsm.com\/news\/naacp-condemns-kkk-imagery\/\">reported by KTSM<\/a>. Branch President Carl B. Dwyer Jr. added: \u201cSilence in the face of hatred is complicity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Veronica Escobar also condemned the images Sunday. Her statement described reports of people in Klan clothing allegedly shouting racial slurs as \u201cdeeply disturbing and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastor Michael Grady told KTSM that hatred was learned and said he wanted to ask the participants about their motives. He said the display reflected a national climate of division and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The branch called on elected officials, faith leaders and civic advocates across El Paso County to speak out against the display.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The robes carry a long history of violence in Texas. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/ku-klux-klan\">Texas State Historical Association<\/a> traces Klan activity in the state to 1868. The later Klan revival drew tens of thousands of Texans in the early 1920s, with hooded marches and burning crosses used to display its power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That history also reached El Paso\u2019s public institutions. <a href=\"https:\/\/kfoxtv.com\/newsletter-daily\/el-paso-reflects-on-1921-kkk-arrival-amid-push-to-tame-its-wild-west-past\">KFOX14\/CBS4 reported<\/a> in February that the local historical society documented Klan control of the school board between 1921 and 1923. The group\u2019s local campaign also targeted Catholics.
