US President Donald Trump has welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House for a formal state visit, with tariffs, Taiwan, the war in Iran and artificial intelligence expected to feature in their talks.
The visit includes an elaborate military ceremony and a state dinner attended by business and technology leaders. The US-China trade agreement, due to expire in November, is also expected to be extended by two months to allow further negotiations.
Chief US correspondent Alan Fischer reports from the White House, where the two leaders are expected to discuss concerns over alleged Chinese targeting information being provided to Iran, as well as Taiwan and the future of AI, which Trump has referred to as “super intelligence”.
The meeting follows Trump’s visit to Beijing in May and comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade, regional security and technology.
