Watch “Need for Speed” by Kim Petras
Right on cue, Kim Petras is back with a dazzling new drop that feels as urgent as it is intentional. “Need for Speed” lands in the midst of a whirlwind release cycle, following her self-released “Pre-Tour“ EP, a string of underground-leaning tracks that have been building momentum across YouTube and SoundCloud. If that run felt like a clearing of the throat, this latest single is the full-voice declaration.
There’s been no mystery surrounding Kim’s current headspace. She’s spoken candidly about the tension between her artistry and the constraints of a major-label system, and “Need for Speed” doesn’t shy away from that reality. Released independently via her own BunHead Records, the track pulses with a sense of reclaimed autonomy. Sonically, it’s a thrilling return to her neon-lit electro-pop roots—high-gloss, high-energy, and undeniably addictive.
Lyrically, though, there’s bite beneath the shimmer. Kim lays it out plainly:
“the constant push for more hits and more success, which ultimately erases your personality until your only personality trait is being so busy and fast that you basically don’t have a life.”
It’s a striking image. One she pushes even further, adding that she wanted to,
“describe this feeling of being in a machine, but wanting to break out of it and feeling like you’ve become this monster version of yourself that isn’t able to let anyone in because there is nothing there except the need for going further and faster.”
The music video, directed by Ashley Hood, amplifies that message with a bold, almost chaotic visual narrative. It’s part industry satire, part personal diary—packed with symbolism and sponsorship, but refreshingly upfront about its meaning. Nothing feels accidental here; every frame feeds into the bigger picture Kim is painting.
And that picture is leading us toward the impending release of the album “Detour“. Whether this detour marks a breaking point or a breakthrough, one thing feels certain: Kim Petras is firmly back in the driver’s seat, and she’s not slowing down for anyone.
