EMERGING ARTIST: Luca George Captures the Bittersweet Magic of Growing Up on “Grow Down”
It has been a short while since I’ve fallen completely under the spell of a new artist. Yet, New Zealand-born, London-based alt-pop newcomer Luca George has managed exactly that.
Ahead of his recent appearance at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, I found myself repeatedly returning to his music. With a co-sign from Troye Sivan already under his belt, curiosity naturally led me to press play. What I discovered was an artist with a rare gift for translating deeply personal emotions into songs that feel universally relatable.
Musically, Luca George occupies a compelling space somewhere between Troye Sivan’s introspective pop sensibilities and the emotional storytelling that has defined Conan Gray’s recent “Wishbone“ era. His songs are thoughtful, reflective and packed with the kind of observations that quietly linger.
His latest release, “Grow Down,” is perhaps his most affecting statement yet. Built around themes of nostalgia, innocence and the inevitable loss of youthful wonder, the track foremost explores those subtle moments when childhood begins to slip through our fingers.
Luca reveals:
“The song moves through the moment where that childlike wonder slowly starts to fade. When someone tells you your wishes will never come true, when you suddenly become aware that people are watching you dance, when the rocks you used to treasure become ice cubes melting in your glass, and when the shoes you wear are too expensive to jump in puddles anymore.”
It’s a beautifully articulated concept, filled with imagery that instantly transports listeners back to their own formative experiences. The poignancy of “Grow Down” lies in its ability to connect with anyone who has ever looked back and longed for a simpler time. Those fleeting moments of carefree freedom and limitless imagination may be behind us. However, the emotions attached to them never truly disappear.
As Luca George continues to build momentum, he feels increasingly like an artist destined for bigger stages and wider recognition. Evidently, this is obvious because Luca seemingly possesses the creative vision to carve out a distinctive place for himself within today’s alt-pop landscape.
