Shania Twain has been around for three decades, and her voice is one of the most recognizable in country music. Yet, she almost had to shelve her dreams and career over a devastating crisis. Shania Twain Knows Devastation
Part of being a good singer/songwriter is having stories to tell. Listeners want to feel your pain and relate to heartache. That is incredibly easy for Shania Twain, who has had her fair share of bad moments but has been able to come back every single time. She had her first husband cheat on her with her close friend, and that ended in divorce. Fortunately, she has found renewed love and seems happier than ever. However, there was one moment in Shania’s life that she will never forget, and that is the call that her parents had died.
She was 22 and just really starting her singing career. At the time, she was studying, but one phone call changed her life. The 60-year-old recalled the story in a recent interview:
I collapsed hearing that news over the phone. My sister called me, and I could hear my little brother howling in the background. We were all just reeling together. The kids could not be separated after that accident.
Therefore, Shania did whatever she needed to ensure that they were taken care of. That meant dropping her dreams of being a singer to be the “guardian” of her siblings. At the same time, she could not mourn her parents as she had to step into survival mode:
I wasn’t allowed to grieve because I was thrown into this state of guardianship. I had to do a lot of things I knew nothing about, like take out a second mortgage for the house, to sustain what was going to happen next. I had to understand the accident reports – loads of things nobody would ever want to have to go through – step by step. It was just terrible.
In a twist, Shania Twain’s mother, Sharon, had a friend, Mary Bailey. She soon became Shania’s first manager and helped her get a job at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario. Shania was able to perform and pay the bills, which was all she wanted. She kept going for three years, and then she got her big break.
The Next Chapter
After all is said and done, Shania Twain’s life has captivated Hollywood. She is set to have her own biopic, Shania, and she is helping with the casting. Fans have shared who they would like to see in the lead role, but time will tell who it will be. It will be interesting to see what parts of her life are highlighted and what the fans do not know or haven’t seen. As of now, her siblings all stay out of the public eye, but they may come out to support her for the big film.
