Hercules & Love Affair Turn A Coming Out Experience Into Gold With “My Journey”
Summer brought us new music from Hercules & Love Affair, who have been steadily building towards the release of not one, but two EPs. I was already rather taken with the infectious disco-tinged anthem “I Get High”, which featured on the blog earlier this year, so naturally I was curious to hear what else was waiting in the wings.
Well, the wait is over. The first instalment, Danseur PT 1, has arrived, and it is the deeply personal “My Journey” feat Hips & Lips that now takes centre-stage.
With its irresistible nod towards the golden age of 90s dance music, “My Journey” pairs those familiar club-ready rhythms with something considerably more intimate: a powerful coming-out statement about leaving shame behind and finally embracing who you are.
“I have a story to be told, this is my journey. I’ve turned my shame into gold, and now it serves me”.
There is something wonderfully liberating about those words, particularly when placed against a dancefloor backdrop. Hercules & Love Affair have always understood that music can be both escape and emotional release, and here the two collide beautifully.
The accompanying video, directed by Miguel Rodriguez, takes that sense of transformation into a dreamlike visual world. Starring actor and drag/performance artist Stephen Smith (AKA performance artist Honeymoon), alongside Kaleb “KABO” Jacobs and Leandra Atenea Levine Hidalgo, the film traces the fear, uncertainty and vulnerability of transformation before arriving at the freedom of self-discovery.

And isn’t that ultimately what makes “My Journey” resonate? Beneath the pulsating beats and nostalgic 90s dance flourishes is a reminder that finding yourself may be complicated, but you don’t have to make that journey alone.
With Danseur PT 1 now spinning, I’m already looking towards the next chapter. Thankfully, Danseur EP 2 is still waiting in the wings. Consider me suitably intrigued — and already putting my dancing shoes somewhere within easy reach.
