Thomas Day Asks “will you be coming around?” as a New Era Begins
There’s something wonderfully deceptive about Thomas Day’s new single “will you be coming around?”. It arrives with the breezy ease of a summer pop song, yet underneath those lighter-than-air melodies is a very relatable question: what happens when the person you can’t stop thinking about might eventually disappear from your life?
For me, that emotional contradiction is what makes this new chapter from the rising indie-pop artist particularly intriguing. The track captures that peculiar feeling of having butterflies in your stomach. Only for those fluttering feelings to gradually morph into a tightly wound knot of anxiety. The music seems to understand that emotional whiplash perfectly, floating along while quietly carrying all that pent-up tension.
Thomas explains the inspiration behind the song rather brilliantly.
“I’ve always struggled with the idea that someone can mean everything to you at one point in your life, and then one day you may never see them again,” says Thomas about the inspiration behind “will you be coming around?” “For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a tendency to obsess over that thought, then I wrote this song during a cute panic attack on a train in N.Y.C.”
A cute panic attack on a train in N.Y.C.? Well, that certainly paints a picture! It also perfectly sums up the slightly chaotic emotional territory Thomas is exploring here.
The accompanying music video, directed by Antony Muse, takes that chaos and throws it into a carefree world of friendship, spontaneity and questionable decisions. We follow a group of friends simply hanging out and living in the moment, while messy situations and unpredictable energy keep bubbling to the surface. There’s even a tantalising feeling that we’re witnessing only one chapter of a story yet to unfold.
There’s more on the horizon too. Thomas heads to Salt Lake City for a headline show on October 8 before appearing at this year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival on October 11. Meanwhile, he’s been teasing unreleased material on TikTok. So I suspect “will you be coming around?” may be just the beginning of this particular era.
And perhaps that’s what I’m enjoying most here. Thomas Day has taken a very ordinary pop feeling — please don’t disappear from my life — and dressed it up in sunshine, pink hair and just enough chaos. Sometimes anxiety really does need a good pop song to dance its way through.
