MEEK’s rise continues. Now “Terminally Verbal” brings a darker twist to her story.

What a year MEEK is having. The rising singer-songwriter has been responsible for some of the catchiest and most captivating pop tracks of the year, and what began as a viral moment with “Fabulous” has developed into something much bigger.

MEEK has been steadily gaining fans stateside, making TV appearances and joining Kesha’s North American tour as a support act. “Fabulous” has also made an impact across US radio and Billboard airplay charts, establishing MEEK as a pop force with plenty more to say. Subsequent releases “Beautiful Freeks” and “Expensive Taste” have only strengthened that reputation.

With her own headline tour looming for November and December, MEEK now adds another intriguing chapter to her rapidly expanding repertoire with “Terminally Verbal”.

I suspect “Terminally Verbal” has already been thoroughly road-tested during MEEK’s many festival appearances this summer. But where “Fabulous”, “Beautiful Freeks” and “Expensive Taste” arrived with their buoyant, colourful energy, this latest offering takes us somewhere considerably darker. There is an almost sinister allure running through the track, offering a decidedly different glimpse of MEEK.

And there is a deeply personal reason behind that shift.

“I spent so much of my life trying to make myself quieter. Less opinionated. More digestible.” MEEK shares “I’ve always been a loud person and it made me feel so judged and exposed all the time, and honestly afraid to speak out. When I started to understand my neurodiversity on a deeper level and who I am as a person, it was so painful to think I had been minimising that beautiful part of myself to make certain people more comfortable. Terminally Verbal is an acknowledgement that no matter who deems you ‘acceptable; or ‘palatable, you are who you are, and your opinions, emotions, and beliefs are absolutely valid and deserve space.”

MEEK’s creative vision extends into the official music video, which she shot and self-directed alongside friends and collaborators at Homoparody during a remarkably speedy five-hour shoot.

The result? Imagine MEEK as a dominatrix lecturer presiding over a classroom of students who appear to be caught somewhere between a trance and a particularly unsettling episode of Squid Game. It is unnerving, theatrical and wonderfully strange — precisely the response that she wants to provoke.

MEEK’s evolution continues at quite some pace. “Terminally Verbal” demonstrates that sometimes finding your voice means turning the volume up until the room has no choice but to listen. And frankly, I wouldn’t want MEEK any quieter.
