Disco Shrine Wants You Dancing With New Single “Wifi Wifey”
I have been craving some proper hard electro beats lately, so when Disco Shrine came charging into my inbox with “Wifi Wifey”, it felt like someone had finally turned the volume back up. The LA-based DJ, producer and pop star has delivered an electrifying new cut that is exactly the kind of unapologetically loud pop energy I have been missing.
Disco Shrine has never seemed particularly interested in following the rules of pop. To my mind, that is precisely what makes her so much fun. Her sound throws hardstyle, dance-pop and mall-pop into the same glitter-covered blender, creating something fierce, playful and wonderfully excessive. It is electro-pop with its hair teased, its Barbie heels on and absolutely no intention of behaving.
Through her Disco Daddy and Persian Barbie alter egos, as well as the ever-growing Barbie Rave community, Disco Shrine has created much more than a collection of songs. She is building a whole colourful universe around her music. One where rave culture, pop fantasy and pure escapism happily collide.
And “Wifi Wifey” fits right into that world. The new track combines high-voltage electronic production with a playful look at love and relationships in the digital age. It is cheeky, energetic and built for movement. While once again highlighting just how much fun can be had when pop isn’t afraid to embrace its electronic side.
I know there is plenty of electro hiding within the wider pop landscape, but I genuinely think artists like Disco Shrine help keep those sounds feeling fresh. When the beats hit this hard, there is little danger of dance-pop becoming background music.
There is plenty more to come, too. Disco Shrine is continuing to build momentum on-stage and behind the decks, with her next appearance seeing her open for the legendary RuPaul at Brooklyn’s House of Yes on Saturday, September 26.
“Wifi Wifey” is therefore landing at exactly the right time for me. Sometimes you need a thoughtful ballad, sometimes you need a perfectly crafted pop song. And sometimes you just need somebody to throw an enormous electro beat at you and tell you to dance. Disco Shrine understands the assignment.
