Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Team Up on “Expectations” Remix
My shoulders are broad, my opinions are my own, and I’m perfectly comfortable admitting that Olivia Rodrigo has never quite tickled my pop fancy. I know, I know. The girl has amassed a gazillion streams, conquered the charts and become one of pop’s most celebrated young stars, but somehow, I’ve remained spectacularly unmoved. Even her team-up with The Cure’s Robert Smith didn’t have me reaching for the fan club membership form. Some things just aren’t meant to be, darling!
But never say never, because along comes Chappell Roan to throw a rather fabulous spanner in the works.
Following Olivia’s inaugural women-led music festival, Daisy Chain Fields, a few weeks ago, where Chappell performed – subsequently she has jumped aboard a remix of “Expectations”, an album track from Olivia’s “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love”. And would you believe it? Suddenly, I’m interested. Well, well, well. Perhaps there is an Olivia-shaped crack in my pop armour after all!
Naturally, it helps that the accompanying music video is an absolute hoot. Directed by Bardia Zeinali, “The Big Expectations Show” serves up a delicious slice of retro-kitsch nostalgia, with Rodrigo and Roan playing different characters in a gloriously over-the-top game show inspired by classic ’80s and ’90s television. Add David Byrne to the mix, throw in a cameo from their shared collaborator Dan Nigro, and you have yourself a pop-culture fever dream that’s impossible to ignore.
It’s colourful, camp and deliciously daft. Frankly, I’d happily tune in for another round.
For Chappell, the remix offers another opportunity to flex her pop credentials, while bringing her back into playlist circulation following 2025’s “The Subway”. And with her unmistakable personality in the mix, “Expectations” remix has certainly found a new way to grab my attention.
There’s more to Chappell’s world than pop mischief, too. Later this month, she’ll host The Super Graphic Spectacular and The Super Graphic Block Party, a two-day Los Angeles charity fundraiser featuring live entertainment, volunteer opportunities and community engagement. So, am I an Olivia Rodrigo convert? Let’s not start printing the T-shirts just yet. But I’ll happily admit when a remix surprises me, and Chappell has certainly worked her magic here. Sometimes it takes a Midwest Princess, a retro game show and a little pop absurdity to get a stubborn music blogger through the door. And honestly? I do love it when pop proves me wrong!
